A Brief Look at Wedding Bands Throughout History

There are many different styles of wedding bands people choose to wear to symbolize their union with another human being. Some people prefer lavish diamond wedding bands that tell everyone they have expensive taste while others choose to wear a simple metal band that does not have any other accessory on it. Historically, these rings have been around for quite some time. Over the years it seems as though they have gotten more and more ornate with the introduction and discovery of new materials.

The ancient Egyptians were known to use papyrus reeds and hemp to braid a circular wedding band that they wore on their left ring fingers. This is certainly an example of using only the materials you are able to gather yourself to make a unique and meaningful piece of jewelry for your significant other to wear.

Centuries ago in the Middle East, a man would give his beloved wife a puzzle ring. Since women are often thought of as property in these cultures, the puzzle ring was designed to be difficult to put back on. If the bride took off the ring for any reason, the groom would know she was unfaithful because it was not very easy to figure out how to put the ring back together.
